The World Boxing Council has ordered #1 Christian Mbilli vs. #2 Jaime Munguia to battle for the interim WBC super middleweight title to decide a mandatory for champion Canelo Alvarez’s belt with that organization.

WBC Orders Munguia-Mbilli

It would be up to Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) to decide if he would want to defend against the Munguia vs. Mbilli winner.

The Mexican superstar already beat Munguia (44-1, 35 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision on May 4th this year, appearing to carry him in the second half, choosing to spare him. The scores were 117-110, 116-111, and 115-112.

Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) would be a problem for Munguia, 28, as he’s an aggressive fighter with excellent power and a high work rate. Although both fighters have shown vulnerability, the 2016 Olympian Mbilli could have too many weapons for Jaime.

Mbilli’s recent wins:

– Sergiy Derevyanchnko: UD 10
– Mark Heffron: KO 1
– Rohan Murdock: RTD 6
– Demond Nicholson: KO 4

The Top Rank and Zander-promoted Mungiia is fighting this Saturday, December 14th, in a 10-round confidence booster against little-known second-tier fighter Bruno Surance (25-0-2, 4 KOs) in Tijuana, Mexico. This fight has gone below the fans’ radar due to Surace being a complete unknown and Munguia’s poor showing against Canelo last May.

The criticism Munguia has received is that his promoters have matched him strategically throughout much of his career. He maneuvered around risky fights to build his 44-1 record without fighting anyone of quality. When Munguia finally did face a good opponent, Canelo, he was no match.
